When watching Muhanga town from a good panoramic view, you get to see gardens with banana tubes close to people’s houses and even next to tarmac roads.
Muhanga town is to be re-organized as part of the master plan of the district advisory committee, following decisions that have been taken as a way of cleaning the town. All banana trees in the area must be cut down for expansion of Muhanga town in Nyamabuye sector.
Since last year, people were being asked to remove the banana tubes but all fell on deaf ears because many of them say that they depend on their harvest and those who have small gardens say it’s the business they depend on. In December 2011 authorities reminded people that they should cut down these banana plants but all the same no one responded.
According to residents, banana tubes which must be removed are those without value of production or do not bear fruits at all, and those that disrupt security and not those that are inside people’s homes.
As a warning, the Executive Secretary of Nyamabuye sector Mugunga Jean Baptiste wrote letters to different concerned people that they shouldn’t exceed 15th January 2012 without cutting the banana tubes in their gardens.
After receiving these letters, people with banana tubes in their gardens insisted they will not cut them until the authorities themselves come to cut them down. Authorities emphasized that those who refuse to cut them down will pay people who will do that work for them.
Munyansanga Barnabé, a resident of Gahogo cell, Nyarucyamo village said that cutting down banana tubes that used to earn him money is like destroying his own.
Some people in this town have started reducing the banana tubes in their gardens but not totally removing them all which is also not allowed.
The Executive Secretary of Nyamabuye sector says that removing these banana tubes should not be a challenge to people because it is among the plans of beautifying the town.
