Ngoma: Kibungo town to set up a garbage recycling factory

Ngoma Kibungo town to set

The problem of garbage disposal in the Eastern Province town of Kibungo in Ngoma district is destined to be history.

The official in charge of environment in the district Sematabaro Mutabaruka confirmed that, the factory which will be constructed at Ruhunga in Kibungo Sector will be reprocessing decomposed rubbish into fertilizers and cooking bricks.

Mutabaruka explained that the works to have the factory running are in their advanced stages because the tender for buying the needed machines has been offered and the buildings to house the factory are also available.

Concerning the non-decomposing garbage like polythene bags and plastics, Mutabaruka said that they did not plan to have them recycled because they were not sure if they could get enough materials to have the machines running.

“We have very little plastic trash that we cannot process them,”  he clarified adding that  the plans to always transport the few they have to Kigali for recycling were in place.

He explained that Kibungo town is among the towns with good garbage management plans because it is being catered for by ‘Girisuku’ cooperative and which also oversees the day today disposal of garbage in the whole town to ensure cleanliness.

Good garbage disposal initiatives have been put in place in most urban areas around the country, but it has been realized over time that in some places, the garbage is not disposed of properly hence leading to problems of poor hygiene and environmental degradation.

Recently, the Prime Minister of Rwanda Pierre Damien Habumuremyi ordered the closure of the Nyanza garbage collection center in Kigali which had become an environmental hazard to the nearest swamp.
