Emmanuel Kayumba the health officer in this district says in this greening program, 700 araucaria trees, 2000 Jacaranda trees and 600 Spathodea trees.

These trees are planted on both sides of the main road in Gicumbi town starting from Ruyaga trading center up to Gicumbi stadium and also at the diocese of Byumba Catholic Church. The trees as well as passipalum grasses are being planted by the people that reside near this road.

Kayumba goes on to say that these trees being planted are replacing the trees that have been in place that are dirtier and scattered in all parts of the town. The trees being planted will make the town more beautiful and tidier when they are grown.

In the program to make Gicumbi town clean and beautiful, the tarmac road through the town is being renovated and another road of stones is being built. Traders and the local residents are being called to put pavements and tiles in front of their shops and houses to make the town prettier.

While residents are being sensitised on living in good environment with fresh air, fruit trees and vegetables as well make good gardens in front or behind the houses.

This comes after many people think that gardens have to have grass and flowers.

Using fruit trees and vegetables to make gardens is one way of fighting malnutrition in Rwanda and improve housing conditions by planting trees that bring fresh air and act as wind breakers.

Apart from good environment, using vegetables in the garden saves land since some people have very small land or none yet they need to have kitchen gardens.

Examples is preparing the garden and grow carrots in rows, they can make a good design yet functional after they ready for eating.

Apart from carrots, cabbages and other types of vegetables look good when grown in some order.

Concerning fruit trees, one can plant avocado trees, mango trees, paw paws, orange trees, lemon, and cassava trees extra.

Kigali city residents have expressed dissatisfaction over poor services offered by garbage collection companies, which residents say has resulted to pilling up of rubbish in homes and neighborhoods.

Residents also say that they the pay for the services every month but collectors have not been abiding by the agreements of collecting garbage on time, and to some extent the trucks take days without appearing in the neighborhoods.

“We pay for these services and its disappointing to have rubbish pilled around the settlements. This poses a danger of contracting diseases. We need to have value for our money” one resident said.

Owners of garbage companies however state that this has been caused by the reluctance of employees who are charged with the responsibility of collecting garbage in the communities.

Ngenzi Jean Paul, one of the garbage collectors says that there has been chaos in the association of garbage collectors and no specific allocation of areas and zones of operation for each company. However this has been resolved by allocating the companies.

He also stated that the delays are caused by the poor road network that connects to the dumping site located in Nduba, and the site has a small capacity.

The city council official in charge of garbage, Mugabo John, says that the problem will be resolved since the construction dumping site will be taken up by the city authorities after the contracted private enterprise proved to be incompetent.

Some residents do not understand the importance of trash cans (poubelle)

While they are put there for passersby to drop garbage in them, garbage bins in Gakenke town are like decorative pieces since they are never used.

Some of the residents revealed they didn’t know the bins are for garbage for example yellow banana peelings because nobody explained it to them.

Samuel Mutumura, a resident of Kamubuga sector narrates: “I see the bins shaped like metal chicken houses but I couldn’t think they are for garbage as nobody ever told me that.”

Another passenger by names of Pierre Bonane explains that trash bins are so vital in maintaining sanitation but residents are not putting them to use just because they are not sensitized on it.

People that continue to drop trash everywhere in Gakenke town should be charged heavy fines so that they start using garbage bins.

To keep Gakenke town clean, flowers and trees were planted in addition to putting in place garbage bins.
